Prostate Health
Prostate enlargement is something that occurs in all men as they get older but the effects vary from person to person. Mostly these symptoms are due to Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (enlargement), otherwise known as BPH for which there are several effective treatments.
We also of course must guard against the possibility of prostate cancer, which can cause the same symptoms.
What are the symptoms of Prostate Cancer?
Sadly, the symptoms of prostate cancer aren’t always there until it has developed to a more advanced stage. Vigilance for the following symptoms can be signs of both benign and malignant prostate enlargement:
- Needing to pass urine more often
- Getting up in the night to pass urine
- Needing to rush to the toilet
- Difficulty getting started going to the toilet
- Straining or needing to push
- A weak urine stream
- Blood in the urine or semen
- Back Pain
- Unexplained weight loss and fatigue

Erectile Dysfunction
Difficulty getting or sustaining an erection is known as erectile dysfunction. It is incredibly common, affecting up to 50% of males at some point in their life, and becomes increasingly common with age.
What causes erectile dysfunction/erection problems?
There are multiple different causes of erectile dysfunction (difficulty getting or sustaining an erection) and a proper medical assessment is required to correctly identify the underlying problem. Causes of erectile dysfunction include:
- Hormone problems (including testosterone deficiency)
- Narrowing of penis blood vessels due to cardiovascular problems
- As a side effect of some medications
- Psychological effects or stress (including unrealistic expectations created by media)
There are a number of treatments now available for erectile dysfunction, but it is important to identify the underlying cause of the problem as they may mask other medical conditions, or leave you dependent on medication unnecessarily.
